In recent years, vegan breakfast foods have become increasingly popular types of recipes. Whether it’s because of the shift toward more health-conscious lifestyles or simply because you want to pack more fruits and veggies into your meals, the vegan diet is here to stay. If you’re just curious about what a vegan breakfast looks like or are 100% determined to start cooking up plant-based meals, this post on vegan breakfast recipes is for you.
Going Vegan Can Be Hard
Although it’s not hard, going vegan is no joke. It consists of completely giving up all animal-based or derived products. Yes, that includes cheese, butter, yogurt, and milk too. It’s like the next level of vegetarianism. Absolutely nothing that comes from animals. Not even honey. While all that sounds complicated if you grew up eating scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast, it’s easier than it seems.
You can get all your protein, vitamins, minerals, fats, and carbs from plant-based sources. These can be legumes, oats and grains, fruits, and veggies. Nuts and seeds too.
For example, beans and lentils are high in protein. Oats and quinoa are high in carbohydrates. Spinach, oranges, and apples are high in vitamins and minerals. Meanwhile avocado and walnuts are high in healthy fats.
As long as you balance your meals well and know which foods you should be eating to fulfill your dietary needs, you’ll be good. If you’re interested in switching over to a vegan diet, it’s always recommended you consult with a dietitian. They will be able to tell you what the best foods are for you and in what quantities, not to mention if you must take any additional supplements like B-12.
Either way, this is a good way to help you get started with some plant based breakfast ideas. Maybe you’ll become more motivated to try out some easy recipes and possibly change your diet altogether.
Enjoy Your Breakfast Vegan Recipes
Like everyone always says, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s no different for vegans. In fact, it’s even more important for people who lead a plant-based diet. Why? They rely on every food group to meet their daily nutritional values. Oftentimes they have to eat higher quantities of food too.
Going vegan isn’t something you can just “wing” if you want to do it the right way. That means there’s more intention and thought put into every meal, versus the rapid convenience of an omnivore diet in which it’s easier to fill up on a bunch of protein and call it a day sometimes.
Think of all the times you’ve only had a protein shake to get you through the morning and into lunch. Smokey bacon, eggs, and a piece of toast too. While they definitely fill you up quickly, they lack lots of vitamins and minerals that can only be found in fruits and veggies.
For this same reason, finding well-balanced vegan breakfast recipes can be hard sometimes. They’re either too complex for a quick morning bite or underwhelmingly bland, or even too processed. Fortunately, I’ve come up with a list of great vegan breakfast recipes for you to check out.
Quick and Easy Vegan Breakfast Ideas
If you’re usually running around in the morning, then you need easy and quick breakfasts. Like 5-15 minute recipes. You probably even prefer ones that can be prepped ahead and are great for on-the-go. If this sounds like you, baked or overnight oats and chia pudding recipes will definitely be some of your go-tos.
Nutritious Vegan Breakfast Smoothies
Smoothies are as easy as it gets when it comes to having a plant based breakfast. You just add all of the ingredients to the blender and process away! Best of all, there are endless flavor combinations to choose from— and you can also come up with your own. Depending on seasonal produce or what you’re craving, you might whip up different kinds of smoothies throughout the year. They can be icy, watery, creamy, fruity, chocolatey, or packed with a little bit of everything.
Savory Vegan Breakfast Options
Not everyone likes sweet breakfasts, at least not all the time anyway. For those of you who prefer savory recipes, tofu scrambles and homemade chimichangas are the way to go. Don’t forget to add your favorite salsas on top or even homemade refried beans for extra protein!
Sweet Vegan Breakfast Treats
Regardless of whether you have 0 or 45 minutes to have breakfast in the morning, there’s always a sweet vegan breakfast recipe for you to try. Some of my favorite include muffins, protein balls, and fluffy waffles.
Vegan Breakfast Bowls
Breakfast bowls are a great opportunity to get creative in the kitchen. While following the recipe is always the way to go, you can add more toppings and customize your bowls depending on what you’ve got in the fridge and/or pantry. Don’t like apples? Change them for pears or sliced bananas. Absolutely love strawberries? Add some more . Missing some crunch? Crispy fried onions or fresh green onions can solve that.
This warmly-spiced baked oatmeal with tender sweet potatoes and an oaty cobbler-like topping is perfect if you love dessert for breakfast. Sweetened with fruity coconut sugar, applesauce, and maple syrup, you don’t need to worry about a sugar high first thing in the morning.

Hi-Energy Vegan Breakfast Quinoa
Quinoa for breakfast is like having oatmeal but with a slightly more nutty flavor. This recipe’s got dried cranberries and cherries for tartness, as well as walnuts and pepitas for a bit of crunch. Feel free to add raisins, dried apples, or other kinds of nuts and seeds if you want to get creative.
You’ll go crazy over this 5-minute smoothie if you’re into tangy green juice. It’s basically the same thing but with slightly more consistency. There’s kale, creamy avocado, tart pineapple, refreshing cucumber, and spicy mint in every sip.
This smoothie has your name written all over it if you love tropical fruit flavors and icy drinks. It’s got coconut water, sweet mango, bananas, pineapple, and cucumber, and a secret veggie ingredient that’s bursting with juicy flavor.

Meatless Tex-Mex Chimichangas
If Tex-Mex food is your thing, you’ve got to try these crispy, baked chimichangas filled with tofu, beans, sautéed veggies, and vegan cheese. Topped with creamy guacamole, they’ll be your new go-to for breakfast.

This recipe’s great for when you’re craving breakfast eggs. They’re cooked with garlic, bell peppers, tender mushrooms, and smokey cumin for the perfect bite. Needless to say the MVP of this dish is the tofu.

These vegan muffins are even better than what you can get at your local bakery. Nothing beats homemade baked goods! This easy recipe’s made with blueberries, whole-wheat flour, crunchy walnuts, and a sprinkle of turmeric for a lovely golden color.
Vegan-Friendly Energy Protein Balls
Some people are always in a rush and don’t have time to sit down and eat, but that doesn’t mean they like skipping breakfast. If you’re usually in a time-crunch, these honey-nut butter protein balls with chewy cranberries and earthy cinnamon are definitely life-savers.
These almond flour waffles with cocoa powder and dark chocolate chips are the definition of dessert for breakfast. They’re sweetened with smokey maple syrup and turn out ultra fluffy with crispy edges for a perfect bite.

No one’s going to judge you for having cookies for breakfast as long as they’re made with bananas, peanut butter, oats, coconut sugar, and warm spices like cardamom and nutmeg.
Tempeh Flex Bowl
This garlicky tempeh bowl with broccoli and beets is an easy way to kickstart your day. Leftover cauliflower is a great add-in, and so are sautéed mushrooms. Drizzled with tahini sauce and served over fluffy rice, you’ll be making this recipe on repeat every week.
