How long can freezer meals last?

Good freezer meal recipes typically last up to 3 months in the freezer. After this, they start to lose their flavor and texture. There’s also a higher chance of freezer burn. Avoid this by writing the date of when the recipe was cooked in the freezer bag. You can also write it on tape and stick it onto the container. Doing so will let you know if you should prioritize eating it or if it needs to be thrown out.

How do you freeze and reheat meals?

Freezing and reheating meals is easy. You must wait until the recipe is fully cooled before you store it, though. It usually takes 30-40 minutes for food to cool down completely and up to 2 hours for baked goods. However, it also depends on whether it was left sitting on the stove or transferred to a container.

Once it comes down to room temperature, it can be placed in freezer bags or containers. If it’s bread or cake, you can slice it or leave it whole but you must wrap it in plastic wrap first. I recommend freezing food in serving-size portions to avoid reheating huge portions later. As far as reheating goes, transfer the freezer meal to the fridge overnight and then reheat it as usual.

What dishes freeze well?

freezer meals recipes

Generally speaking, non-creamy dishes freeze well. For example, chicken soup with veggies can be frozen and thawed easily. On the other hand, cheesy cream of broccoli will likely separate during the thawing process. This happens because fat molecules separate from water molecules when freezing, and stay separated once thawed. It only becomes evident once thawed and reheated because the ice crystals holding everything together melt. As a result, recipes with lots of milk, cream, melted cheese, or yogurt (especially soups and sauces), are likely to split.

When deciding if something freezes well, you should also consider whether the fruits and veggies in it have a high or low water content. The higher the water content, the more water molecules freeze within it and change the overall texture once they melt again. If it has low water content, the ingredients’ texture won’t change as much.

How do I get started making freezer meals?

If you want to meal prep recipes for freezing, the first thing you need to do is decide what dishes you want to cook. Then look into their ingredients and figure out if they’re mostly low or high-water content fruits and veggies. If you need to make any ingredient swaps, do that.

Finally, it all comes down to prepping your veggies, protein, and grains. Set aside a couple of hours to peel, chop, slice, and get everything ready. Most people do this the night before they get cooking, usually during the weekend. If you’ve got enough time, why not cook it all on the same day so you’re set for the week? Think of it as regular meal-prepping but with recipes that work for freezing.

Healthy Freezer Meal Recipes in a Nutshell

These freezer meal prep recipes should be a headstart on your journey to eating more wholesome meals regardless of your lifestyle. As you venture into it, you’ll experiment with more ingredients and even new recipes. It’s all about cooking meals that work for you. Not just in terms of flavor, but prep time as well. Despite being freezer meals, different amounts of prep work and cooking time go into recipes. Quesadillas versus turkey soup, for example.

Use this article to help you sort through the types of recipes that are realistic to incorporate into your weeknights. Will it be sheet-pan fajitas or slow-cooker turkey soup? If you hate turning the oven on, stick to the stove with salmon patties or fried rice. No slow-cooker? That’s okay, there are plenty of other dishes to choose from.

The same happens for how much prep work goes into each meal. Do you need to chop up 20 different ingredients? Do you prefer sticking to a few ingredients? Do you have a rice cooker to make certain recipes more hands-off? More prep work definitely goes into dishes like my mixed seafood soup compared to an air-fried chicken. They’re things to think about.

Once you’ve figured out what your commitment to home cooking looks like, preparing great freezer meal recipes will be a smooth, effortless process. Good luck!
