Whether you’re just throwing together a fast lunch or prepping for a larger meal, microwaving egg noodles saves time without sacrificing quality.
Why Cooking Egg Noodles in the Microwave Works
Microwaving egg noodles is an uncomplicated method of cooking that can be especially useful for those living in small spaces, dorms, or on particularly hectic days when there’s no time to cook anything. As long as you use a bowl with tall sides that’s safe for use in the microwave and always make sure the water covers the pasta completely, there’s no need to worry about starchy water boiling all over your appliance. Additionally, because microwaves distribute heat evenly throughout, every inch of every noodle gets cooked through perfectly every single time.

What Kind of Egg Noodles to Use?
When selecting noodles for this recipe, wide egg noodles work particularly well. Their broad shape allows for even cooking, and they tend to hold up nicely without becoming too mushy. However, you can also use fresh egg noodles or other varieties, depending on your preference. Just be mindful that cooking times may vary slightly depending on the thickness and type of noodles you choose.

How to Cook Egg Noodles in the Microwave
Step 1: Prepare the Bowl
Start by placing the egg noodles into a microwave-safe bowl. It’s important to choose a bowl with tall sides, as this will help prevent the water from bubbling over while cooking. Cover the noodles with enough water to ensure they are fully submerged.
Step 2: Microwave the Noodles
Lightly cover the bowl with a microwave-safe lid or plate to prevent splattering while still allowing steam to escape. Microwave the noodles on high for 6-10 minutes. Cooking time may vary depending on your microwave’s power and the type of egg noodles used. Check the noodles halfway through to ensure they are cooking evenly and adjust the time as needed.
Step 3: Drain and Rinse
Once the noodles have reached your desired level of tenderness, carefully remove the bowl from the microwave. Use a strainer to drain the water from the noodles. If you’re preparing these noodles for meal prep, rinse them under cool water to stop the cooking process and cool them down before storing them in a container.
Step 4: Serve or Store
Your egg noodles are now ready to be added to your favorite recipe or stored for later use. If you’re not using them immediately, store the noodles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
