When the sun is shining bright and bold in the sky, there is something about it that just makes me want to get outside! I love to fire up the grill, invite some friends over, and make something delicious. Cooking outside with some music playing, surrounded by great company and amazing food makes me feel alive. I was in the mood for something a little spicy and full of flavor, so I decided to remix one of my favorite jalapeño dishes – the Bison Jalapeño Poppers.

This time I substituted lean ground turkey for bison, tossed in some Italian-inspired seasonings and wrapped it all in turkey bacon.  Couldn’t believe it until I tasted it, but it was better than the original recipe!

The jalapeño poppers keto recipe written below makes 18 poppers, but you can easily increase the ingredients to make as many poppers as you want if you are not a lazy and slow cooker! They are a perfect snack through the week, as an appetizer before a meal, for watching the Super Bowl or to serve at a dinner party.

The jalapeño popper filling recipe I use here is creamy, full of flavor, and healthy. You don’t have to feel guilty enjoying these spicy treats. I think they make a great snack through the week when I want something full of flavor but not heavy, and I’ve even served them with one of my many favorite burger recipes for something a little different.

When you make this easy bacon jalapeño poppers recipe, you’ll see what I mean! There’s something about a stuffed jalapeño loaded with an amazing cheddar cheese mixture that makes you feel like summer has arrived. Of course, the turkey bacon and grill preparation take these poppers to the next level because everything is better with bacon – and over a hot fire! My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Make Ahead and No-Grill Instructions

If you want to incorporate these poppers into your meal plan for the week or just make them ahead, assemble and wrap jalapeño poppers in aluminum foil. Store in the refrigerator and cook them within 2 days.

If you want them to last longer, lay them on a pan and flash freeze them in the freezer. Once frozen, you can add them to a freezer bag for easy storage and cook when you’re craving something spicy and delicious.

To make these when the weather is less than cooperative, you can skip the grill and use the oven instead. Simply arrange them on a baking sheet and bake at 400ºF for about 8 to 10 minutes, or until the bacon is crispy and the roasted peppers have some color. Keep in mind, there’s something extra about flame roasting these peppers on the grill and you’ll lose some of the flavors in the preheated oven, but they’ll still be very good.

Turkey Jalapeño Poppers

These turkey bacon wrapped jalapeño poppers makes the perfect appetizer, party snack, or even side dish if you’re feeling adventurous! This easy recipe requires a little prep work, but it’s worth it for the cream cheese filling, crispy bacon, and fresh jalapeños. Yum! This is one of the jalapeño recipes you’ll want to save!

Ingredients

* Optional Substitution Note

Ingredients for 18 poppers:

  • 1/2 lb (8oz) 93% lean, ground turkey (uncooked, raw)
  • 9 jalapeños
  • 9 slices turkey bacon (I recommend purchasing turkey bacon made from actually leg or thighs, natural, nitrate free, uncured. I purchase the kind from Applegate.)
  • 1 tablespoon garlic (minced or paste)
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 3/4 cup 2% Greek yogurt
  • 1/3 cup goat cheese crumble
  • Seasonings:
    • 1/2 tablespoon oregano
    • 1 grapefruit spoon dill
    • sea salt & pepper to taste

Steps

Step 1

Fire up the grill. You want the temperature at least to 350F.

Step 2

Prepare the ground turkey. Set a nonstick skillet on medium-high heat and spray lightly with a little coconut or olive oil. Toss in the red or green onions and garlic powder and cook until the onion becomes brown and somewhat translucent. Once that happens, toss in the lean ground turkey and cook. Use a wooden spatula to chop up the turkey as it cooks, removing any big clumps of meat.

Step 3

Prepare the turkey bacon. Slice the turkey bacon vertically in half in order to create two long, narrow strips of bacon from one slice of bacon. Repeat for all 9 strips of bacon.

Step 4

Prepare the jalapeños. Slice the jalapeño down the middle. Using a small spoon, carve out the insides and scrape away all of the white seeds. This step is especially important if you are making this for children or individuals who cannot handle spicy food.

Step 5

In a bowl, mix together ground turkey, Greek yogurt, goat cheese, and the seasonings.

Step 6

Using a spoon, fill each jalapeño-half with the mixture, then wrap 1/2 slice of turkey bacon around it. Repeat.

Step 7

Place the poppers on a grill, with the mixture facing up, and allow them to grill for 23 to 25 minutes until you see the edges of the jalapeño turn brown and the edges of the turkey bacon become crispier.

Step 8

Remove from the heat and enjoy immediately!
