Quarantine Cooking – Homemade Chocolate Granola Cereal with Almond Butter

If you’re looking to level up your cereal game, this cereal recipe is just for you! While this may not be the perfect time to go out and grab a granola bar in the store, you can still make a great granola recipe right in the comfort of your own home. Grab your apron, because it’s time to make some Chocolate Granola Cereal!

Granola is a staple breakfast food and snack food consisting of oats, nuts, and sweeteners. Many varieties of granola are high in sugar, which can harm your health. Be sure to carefully read labels, choosing products with whole ingredients — like raisins, seeds, and nuts — that are high in protein and fiber.
For the dry ingredients, mix in gluten-free oats, unsweetened dark chocolate powder, and sea salt in a mixing bowl. You can also add in cacao nibs if it’s available, but if you don’t have it, it’s fine as well.

In a separate bowl, mix in your almond butter (or the nut butter of your choice), maple syrup, and olive oil until smooth. You can use avocado oil or coconut oil as well.

Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and gently fold it in until every oat is coated. Then, use a large baking tray and put parchment paper on it. Add your oats and spread them out evenly in the pan.

Bake your granola for 20-22 minutes, stirring halfway through. Make sure to take it out of the oven and mix it using a spatula, then spread it back out and continue the baking process. Mixing the granola prevents the oats from clumping so that it cooks evenly.

Once finished baking, place your granola on a cooling rack to cool down. Once your granola has cooled down, throw in your chocolate chips and stir it in with the granola. Allow your granola to cool down to room temperature. You can store this in an airtight jar for up to 2 months.

Tada! You just made your chocolate granola recipe! You can enjoy eating this as your cereal or as a parfait.

Ingredients for ~5 cups

15 servings – general serving size of granola 1/3 cup 
  • Dry
    • 4 cups raw gluten-free oats
    • 1/3 cup dark chocolate powder (unsweetened)
    • 1/3 cup unsweetened cacao nibs, OPTIONAL
    • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • Wet
    • 1/2 cup raw natural almond butter (OR your choice of natural nut butter – just make sure there’s oil; I used crunchy almond butter)
    • 1/2 cup maple syrup
    • 1/4 cup olive oil (or avocado oil or coconut oil)
  • 1/2 cup  dark chocolate chips


Step 1

Set oven to 350F.

Step 2

In a large bowl, mix together the dry ingredients.

Step 3

In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients until smooth.

Step 4

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix well until EVERY oat is covered in the mixture.

Step 5

Line a large baking tray with parchment paper. Add the oats and spread them out in the pan.

Step 6

Bake for 20-22 minutes total, STIRRING HALFWAY through. This is important to do – remember to take the granola out the oven halfway through and stir it up using a spatula, then spread it back out and continue baking.

Step 7

Once finished baking, and your house smells amazing, place the granola on a cooling rack, or even on the counter (while still on the parchment paper).

Step 8

Once the granola has nearly cooled down, about 10 minutes, sprinkle in the chocolate chips. TIP:  The granola should not be so hot that it immediately melts the chocolate.  If so, wait to add the chocolate.  Stir the granola with the chocolate chips and then allow everything to cool down to room temperature.  You can also place the granola in a fully cooled baking tray and place it in the fridge for 10 – 15 minutes to help it cool with the chocolate.

Step 9

Store the granola in an airtight container for up to 2 months at room temperature, or in the fridge to last even longer.

Step 10

Enjoy as cereal or as a parfait.
