Start by washing the broccoli thoroughly under cold water. Cut it into evenly sized florets to ensure even cooking. Don’t toss the stems—peel and slice them thinly for steaming if desired.
Pour about 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water into a pot and place a steamer basket or heat-safe colander inside. Make sure the basket sits above the water level. Cover the pot and bring the water to a boil over high heat.
Once the water is boiling and steam is rising, place the broccoli into the steamer basket. Cover the pot and steam for 5–7 minutes, depending on how tender you prefer your broccoli. It should turn bright green and be fork-tender but not mushy.
